If a formal wedding wasn't exactly your idea, cuff links are a great way to make a subtle statement. You can rock anything from mother of pearl to gambler cufflinks and your mother-in-law might not even notice.

Cufflinks go with French cuffs, and they should be worn "kissing" - that is to say, with the edges of the French cuff shirt lying flat against each other. If you rent a tuxedo, chances are your shirt will come with the option to wear cuff links or forego them altogether. Why not go classy for this occasion.

If you rent your tuxedo, a set of black cuff links and plastic shirt studs will be part of the package, and yours to lose. No need to do anything fancy, but if you want to be a bit more creative than your local tuxedo rental shop, consider going the personalized route. The groom should consider purchasing high quality cuff links as a gift for his groomsmen and best man. They can purchased online, and there are some great, personalized cufflinks available. But instead of having the guys nicknames or initials engraved (although that is an option) why not pick up some Harley-Davidson cufflinks for the Harley-minded groomsman or computer chip cufflinks for the techie. Present these as a gift to the groomsmen at the rehearsal dinner.

Shirt studs like the front of the tuxedo shirt, and are generally purely decorative buttons. If you rent a tuxedo, you'll receive a pile of shirt studs. If you're wearing a cummerbund, you'll need all of the studs, so don't lose them. If you're wearing a vest, you'll need three or four.

The potential of being in a joyful, drunken stupor or madly rushing to your honeymoon is real, so try to keep track of the cufflinks and shirt studs. Rental companies will charge you a replacement fee for misplacing them, no matter how good the excuse is!
